Illustration Friday - Impatience

Picasso and Pollock could no longer contain their impatience. They swept Amy off her feet, mussed up Mrs. Whittle's mums, crashed through Mr. Brickmeyers fence and landed with a thud in Mrs Baumhoffer's laundry. Amy was going to hear about this.

Ever have one of those days... not 30 minutes ago, I was painting and wiping away tears because I just can't get what's in my mind colorwise to come together and appear on paper. The sheer frustration has me doubting my ability to ever breakthrough in this industry. I usually am a huge fan of the quote "the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best" but I tell you. I look at the work of my fellow illustrators and friends, and honestly, their talent is blinding. Then I look at mine, and think who am I kidding. Seriously. Ugh.

Forget the tears! The joy of creative self-expression is truly what counts and it shows through in this fun illustration of pets in the act of impatient and creative self-expression!

I have days like this! I think we all do!
Sometimes it helps to move away from it and do some totally different, even if for ten minutes. I usually go back through some picture books I have and just look into the pages and it helps.. I usually find something that just gives me an extra boost of confidence and TADAH! Everything turns out in the end!

Good luck! and don't give up!

You have the gift of being able to create very expressive characters and environments with simple lines. There is always a sense of action in your work, and an element of fun too. That's hard to achieve! Developing a better handle on how you want to use color will come the more you practice and observe the palettes of other illustrators that you like.
Hang in there, you are already doing all the right things to get your work out there!

This illustration hits home for everybody. What resulted is a great interpretation of this week's challenge! Keep drawing!

Very sweet illustration and lovely description. Love your linework and movement, you've got a great style. Don't get disheartened only you can interpret the world around you and create like you do :) There are many amazing illustrators out there and the industry is competitive but remember that you have your own unique style. I look at it this way: no one would ever get work if we all illustrated in the same style! thanks for your nice words on my blog.

No worries. Just keep drawing every day, and try to forget about an audience--especially for the IF stuff!

Hi Michelle - I think EVERY artist has these doubts. I have not heard one yet who doesn't. we all think we are imposters!
And I understand your tears. I have the same issues myself - I have all these incredible swirly images in my head but disappoint myself in getting them out. I don't think there is any answer -- except, perhaps, practice!

chin up xx

When I first glanced at it- I thought- "very Japanese" - the colors- the motion- the composition- I luv Japanese prints and Japanese design- so this is meant as a compliment. Those mean little voices that whisper in our ears telling us that we're no good can be hurtful - silence them with drawing more- drawing what you love-try something new- don't compare yourself to others- let others inspire you to do better. there's always gonna be someone drawing better than you- but no one can BE YOU - just let go and be you.

Michelle - we all have those moments and when we reach the point of tears and truly questioning who we are that is when the best work comes. And I think it did here for you!!!

I don't know if the palette is what you intended, but it's really working! I love the colors, action, and composition. It's a wonderful piece!!

Tell that inner critic to go elsewhere!

I think we all have those moments where we think "what am I doing here?" But none of us would be doing it if we didn't feel like we needed to. You have a wonderful sense of character and a lively line style.

Girlfriend, I have seen your work and I am inspired by it! As a newby to the world of children's illustration I get a lot of motivation from viewing other illustrators work INCLUDING YOURS! And that's the honest truth.

Before reading your post I thought how much I liked this illo, how much I feel you're improving! In this illo you have movement and great composition, and I think the colors work well, too. I also sympathize with your feelings (like everyone says, I have them too), but your love for illustrating should override your fears (it does for me, anyone) and, with lots of trial and error, I believe you will be everything you hope to be one day.

Just a thought (and disregard it if you like), have you considered trying different watercolor paper? I've discovered that the kind of paper I use has a huge impact on the way the colors turn out.

when I said lots of trial and error, it sounded like I was singling you out. I mean that ANYONE who creates must go through that to achieve their very best.
