This is a wonderful book all about slavery.Isabel is an orphaned slave in the Revolutionary War and her mistress has died.Now she and her 5 year old sister Ruth are sold to a mean Loyalist family who take them away from their home in Rhode Island.She and Ruth must fight to survive in the cruel hands of Madam Lockton,or whatever else New York decides to throw at them.They make a few friends,and foes ,too.Then something tragic happens and Isabel must try and pull through.
